Ten For Tuesday Episode 073: The Road To Judas Priest

Well, I decided to upload this one early. The more I thought about it I decided not to wait and see if I could get it uploaded after the long drive we're facing tomorrow. Why chance it and besides, I'll be tired and the prospect of staying up trying to make hotel wi-fi work for me isn't too appealing. So it's early like a birthday or Christmas gift. You're welcome.

As the episode title says we are on our way to see Judas Priest in Denver, Colorado. Now I've seen them before in Stuttgart while I was stationed in Germany but Tommy (my co-host for notmovingpictures podcast) has never been able to see them. He's seen a lot of concerts but it just never happened for him. Until now that is. We plan on going up Pike's Peak and seeing the Garden Of The Gods as well. What's that got to do with this episode you ask? Not a lot but I felt like talking about it. Just when I thought I had figured out the mono/stereo problem it was made very clear to me that I in fact had not. So the lineup remains fluid until the very last bit of recording. Ah well, at least I'm on a road trip and that means a lot.

Judas Priest - Breaking The Law
Smashing Pumpkins - One And All
The Dead Milkmen - Pretty Music For Pretty People
Freedom Club - Stranger
The Estranged - The Subliminal Man
The Clash - Know Your Rights
The Returnables - Love Letters
Urge Overkill - Tequila Sunrise
Company - Rising Up
Hospitality - I Miss Your Bones

Ten For Tuesday is a podcast dedicated to playing the music I couldn't find anywhere else. The music I like varies from style to style, genre to genre and era to era. You will hear punk, ska, rock, Americana, metal, country, rockabilly and more from all over the world. It doesn't matter if it's a major label or indie as long as I like it then it gets played. The motto is Less Talk More Music which means you won't hear me waxing poetic for fifteen minutes between songs. At TFT its all about the music...and me of course.

Some New Words - Land Of Lies

Sitting in church yesterday letting my mind wander (sometimes that's the best I can manage) when what should appear but an idea. That idea once written gives birth to more words than I originally realized were there. Today as I typed the result of my wandering mind and edited it as I went I now have this. Is it pretentious? Boring? Overhyped? Judge for yourself, for me it's just what I wrote and believe. Take it as such.

                                                               Land Of Lies

Surrounded by false prophets
Some well concealed
Others hiding out in the open
They've had years to practice
Daring you to open your eyes and fully acknowledge just what they are
Confident that you won't to the fullest point of arrogance
Even if you do they'll keep enough sycophants under their thrall to continue their lives of excess
They bluster and shriek their idiocy and the masses bleat out their answering call
Mesmerized by the unfounded affirmations of honor and trust
This has become a land of lies
What once was wrong is now right
The land that I, my father and his father served
For those hearing this sitting there shaking their heads in agreement
Giving a "yeah right" vote of confidence to these words
STOP
It's you I'm speaking to
Don't blindly agree because it sounds good or it's the newest trend
Think a little
Use your brain
Make a decision for yourself based on reality not on someone else's idea of correctness
Don't turn me into a false prophet
Don't make me into that which I speak against
Or do I overestimate myself and perhaps you?

Is It Worth It?

I wrote this yesterday sitting at the mall observing the people that were out in force doing their holiday shopping.

I'm sitting here at the mall watching my son play at the Xbox station. It's right next to Starbucks. There are a ton of people waiting for their beverage of choice. The thing is, they're really slow on delivering those drinks. People have been standing in a loose mob waiting patiently for their addiction. I've never had Starbucks, never even been a coffee or even warm drink person so I don' t know if the wait is worth it. I mean, how good could it be?

It would have to be pretty amazing to make me spend my time idly standing with the rest of the herd waiting for my fix. These people are in line for at least twenty minutes if not more just to PLACE their order. Then it's even longer to get your drink. That time could be better spent sitting comfortably attempting in vain to make the "free" Wi-Fi work on my tablet. It's not gonna happen but at least I've been trying. That's gotta count for something, right? Right?

Ten For Tuesday Episode 072: Frustration Part Deux

And I thought last week was frustrating. I've recorded and deleted parts of this episode more than four times. Everything looks fine individually but when I out it all together suddenly files change from stereo to mono. It makes absolutely zero sense. Of course after making the last change I had to re-record all of my audio and edit it and.........well you get the point. It's enough to make me wish I could afford to buy some good software and take a class on how to use it. But I can't so I end up trudging forward with what I've got. Frustrating? Immensely, at times. Ah well, I keep telling myself that it's worth it because I enjoy doing it (overall) and perhaps the handful of listeners think so too. Enough bitching, here's the music even though it's a day late:

Radioactivity - Other Life
Generacion Suicida - Estoy Sangrando
Toxic Reasons - War Hero
Jason And The Scorchers - Last Time Around
Lone Justice - I Found Love
The Long Ryders - I Want You Bad
Wednesday Week - Why
Parasitic Twins - It's Shoved (Melvins Cover)
Defiance, Ohio - The Calling
Belgrado - Those Times

Some People Just Deserve A Trick

Seems every year after Halloween I write about how things used to be. You know, less people are giving out candy than when I was young or how I would go out trick or treating by myself and now that's just not possible. So am I doing that this year? Well a little and then I'll pass on a story from when I was young. This year I noticed that if three or four houses close together were giving out candy my son referred to it as a jackpot. When I was his age almost every house was giving out candy. You could walk down one side of a street for several blocks and then come back on the other side and your bag would be bulging.

My complaint (as always) is that if you have your garage light on and your porch light on AND you have house lights on but you do not answer your door because you are not participating then you are a jerk. If you don't treat and meet the already mentioned qualities then you deserve a trick. It made me wish I had some rotten tomatoes to throw. But I didn't so I couldn't, not that I really would. What kind of message would I be imparting on my son if I did that? I just don't get why people do that on this one day of the year. It's cruel and unjust I tell you.

On to my promised story. Towards the end of my trick or treating career perhaps around twelve years of age (I can't remember exactly when, hey, I'm old) I had a near incident. I'd been out with a friend but he'd already departed for home while I had chosen to continue on to an area I'd never been to before. It was further out from my normal "territory" than I was used to and it was getting late. The lure of more candy was great however and I pushed on.

My luck was not great. Maybe because people had already given out their candy, maybe people in that area weren't participating that much that year, it's hard to say. With my prospects dimming and very few houses having their lights on I turned and started making my way home. Not long after that I heard a car pull up and a kid I didn't recognize got out. If you're thinking he was also trick or treating late like me then you'd be wrong. He called out to me "hey kid" and started walking towards me.

At this point every fiber of my being screamed out that this was wrong, something bad was about to happen. I kept walking and he kept calling out to me progressively getting louder. The car he had materialized from was pacing him down the street. Suddenly, before he could get too close to me, I decided to make a run for a house that still had it's porch light on close by and started knocking on the door loudly. His cries of "hey kid" changed as he flung epithet after epithet at me before jumping back in the car as the front door of the house opened.

The car peeled out and raced off and I was safe. I don't recall if I even got candy from that house, my mind was consumed with frantic thoughts of how close I had been to getting beaten up and having my bag of candy stolen. Clearly it was time to go home, it would have been most unwise to ignore this omen. My head was on a swivel as I warily walked the rest of the way home. The slightest noise had me spooked that the car was returning and the kid was going to finish the job he had started. None of that came to be thankfully and I made it home safely with my candy intact.

Personally while I believe the kid who wanted to assault me and steal my candy was a scumbag but really I feel that the person driving the car was an even bigger scumbag. It's one thing to go out intending to steal but the person (brother, cousin, neighbor?) was old enough to drive and still took him out knowing what he wanted to do. Hell, maybe it was his idea in the first place. What a role model. There you have it, my story of what almost was. I hope that kid didn't get anybody else that year or any other but even moreso I hope that at some point if he didn't feel some remorse for his actions then he at least eventually got his karmic comeuppance.

Hopefully my son will never have something like this happen to him but if he does perhaps I can teach him to be prepared and ready to defend himself. Of course it doesn't hurt that he's a big kid, much bigger than I was at that age. Unless of course I'm still taking him around when he's twelve or thirteen years old which I probably will be doing. I don't think a thief would have the guts to do it with an adult around. Here's hoping we never have to find out.
